Meet Sarah Harris
At The Big Red Group (BRG) we encourage employee engagement in many ways, however one of those ways is through hosting Lunch n Learns. These are lunchtime talks where we invite people that we respect into our workplace, everyone gathers together with their lunch, to hear the person’s story and garner some pearls of wisdom — there is always something to learn from others.
This week we were lucky enough to have media personality and broadcast journalist Sarah Harris join us to share her story.
Sarah is a co-host of Studio 10 and also the host of Shark Tank. Originally hailing from Mount Druitt in Sydney, Sarah has worked her way up in the media industry with a career now spanning 20 years under her belt.
Having worked as a journalist for two decades, Sarah got her first gig in Brisbane at Seven News and Today Tonight. She’s worked in many roles throughout her career including court reporter, weather writer, Channel 9 news anchor, reporter for a string of devastating natural disasters — including the Black Saturday fires which she explained took its emotional toll — before landing her current gig as co-host on Studio 10 which has gone from strength to strength.
What people love about Sarah is her relatability. Sarah walked us through her journey from humble beginnings to where she finds herself today with a real sense of groundedness and peaceful gratitude for what she now has in her life.
After meeting countless celebrities and influential people in her time in the spotlight, we asked her who was the most remarkable person she’d met — unsurprisingly her answer was Richard Branson. Sarah told us that she had spent time on a job at his game reserve in Africa and explained that Richard really does have that something special that makes every person he speaks to feel important. Having met the man himself, that is something I can attest to. She told us that she asked him to sign a book for a friend of hers and he replied “no problem, leave it with me”, only to return it to her with four handwritten pages for the recipient. A true testament to his character.
We ended the session discussing her short lived pumpkin smashing Guinness World record and with Sarah offering us this last real piece of wisdom…
Life isn’t about the black and white, it’s about the grey in between – Sarah Harris
This really is quite true. In life, as in business, we are often operating in the grey. We are presented with challenges daily, there are ups and downs… but it is how you handle both that determines your resilience – an essential ingredient for business.
